We believe that all things in this world are marked with the dignity of creation and echo the lies of the fall. As such, there is a battle in every art form between creation and destruction, beauty and distortion, truth and lies – as Dan Strange says, there are points in every worldview with which the Christian can connect and those which they must confront. In the marketplace of ideas, film is the 24hr Tesco – it’s affordable, it’s convenient, and everyone pops in at some point.

Cinexegesis is a monthly course in which we will study the ideas that films inject into society, see their unique ability to persuade our morality and affect our desires. As we go, we’ll learn how to run fruitful discussion evenings off the back of a film, and how to bring the gospel to the fore of those conversations in a natural, persuasive way.

Expectations of Participants

Participants will be expected to attend a total of six virtual gatherings of the ten that will run in 2022. Before each gathering participants will be expected to watch two films, at least one of which will be discussed in the session. Participants may incur an additional cost if they need to purchase the films to watch.

Every now and again there may be a film which participants will wish not to watch for reasons of conscience – a precis will be provided for them, perhaps accompanied by one or two clip extracts of the film on YouTube. These will be included in the list sent to all participants – there will be no need to ‘ask permission’ not to watch these films. This will never apply when only one film is being discussed.

Certain sessions might be triggering to some participants – the leader will clearly flag where this is likely and participants are encouraged to look ahead at the whole year’s schedule and pick out which sessions would be most beneficial and appealing to them.

There will be a small amount of set reading and then further recommended reading.
Participants will be encouraged to host or participate in their own film discussion evenings across the year – time will be made to feed back on how these have gone.

Course dates and times

The course will consist of ten monthly sessions, on the third Wednesday evening of the month:
19 Jan, 16 Feb, 16 Mar, 20 Apr, 18 May, 15 Jun, 20 July, 21 Sep, 19 Oct and 16 Nov.
There is deliberately no session in August or December to avoid popular holiday times.

Each session will run from 7.30-9.00pm on Zoom. Please note there will be films to watch before each session.

Cost

The cost for one participant is £150 for the course (ten sessions). Couples are welcome to join together and pay only for one participant, however if others would like to join on the same screen a separate booking would need to be made. Local groups who would like to do the course together may be interested to know this course will be packaged to purchase for a set cost in the near future so it may be more economical to wait and purchase the course to do together in your own time. Do be in touch (forum@crosslands.training) if you’d like to discuss what is best for your situation.
