Most Christian leaders are painfully aware of the complexities of exercising leadership in the local church  today. The biblical vision for leadership is rich and beautiful: far more cohesive and comprehensive than secular sources. But changes in our culture, high profile leadership failures, and the challenges of leading our churches through the pandemic have exposed a great deal about ourselves as leaders and about the churches we lead.  Many (formerly confident) leaders are humbled and exhausted; some are despairing and tempted to give up altogether.  We often feel like we are the only ones struggling, but we aren’t.  Most of us could do with the help of our peers to deepen and apply our understanding of the riches of Scripture to our posture and practice of leadership.

‘Cultivating Leadership’ is a course for experienced Christian leaders to wrestle with the challenges of leadership through a biblical theological framework with a group of peers.

Across five weekly sessions  (90 mins per session) you can pause and take stock of your own leadership.  Be reminded that we are first followers – children of our Creator God – and why and how we are called to lead under God’s loving rule.  We’ll work through both biblical principles and practical implications for what it means to cultivate and to connect as leaders, and work on the development of both character and competence.  We will have time to wrestle with hard issues that we rarely talk about, both the issues we’ll introduce for discussion and issues that participants may want to bring to the table.  For example:

  • Why do people follow some leaders and not others?
  • Is it possible to be as skilled in handling God’s people as we are at handling God’s word?
  • How do the scars in our own hearts shape how we lead other people?
  • What does godly resilience look like?
  • What does diplomacy look like when relationships breakdown between Christian leaders?
  • Is it okay to ‘be strategic’? Can we do that biblically?
  • What wisdom is there for leading a church through a season of change or uncertainty?
  • Are there practical skills that can help me to exercise leadership in a healthy way?
  • How do I help others grow into leadership?

The small group format includes scope to explore the leadership challenges that matter to those in the group,  and to connect with fellow leaders for encouragement and help.
