What does a Basecamp module involve?

Taking a Basecamp module involves five steps:

  1. Doing the corresponding online Foundation course;
  2. Doing the required reading / reading the set text;
  3. Doing some of the optional further reading (four or five good additional sources that we recommend);
  4. Attending two 1-hour online group tutorials, one in about week 4/5 of the module; one in about week 8/9 (tutorials are recorded in case people can’t attend ‘live’);
  5. Writing a 1,000-1,500-word essay

What will we be studying?

The Basecamp modules are:

Core

Reading and Understanding the Bible

Christian Doctrine: God, Humanity and Christ

Christian Discipleship

Further

Church History

Pastoral Care

Teaching and Preaching the Bible

How much time will it take me?

Doing one Basecamp module is about 3.5 – 4 hours of work per week (1.5 – 2 hours of online study, and 1.5 – 2 hours of reading) or half-a-day per week.
Doing two Basecamp modules is about 7-8 hours (one full day) of study per week.

Do I need any qualifications to study on Basecamp?

There are no formal qualifications for enrolling on Basecamp, but completing the programme does require reasonably good literacy skills because there will be both reading and writing tasks to do.  Reasonable fluency in English is also needed, though no formal ESOL or equivalent qualifications are required.  If you are not sure about whether the level will work for you, we can give you access to a taster of the material so you can try it out and see how you get on.

Are there exams to take?

No. There is one assignment per module, a 1,000-1,500-word essay, which is marked by our Basecamp tutors.

How much support will I receive as a Basecamp student?

Assuming you join our public cohort, you will have Zoom-calls with your study group, led by your Basecamp tutor, at key points during the programme. Your assignments will be graded and you’ll get feedback on your work. Provided you pass all the modules, you’ll receive a Basecamp completion certificate.

What qualification will I receive for completing Basecamp?

Crosslands will issue a certificate of completion for either:

  • Basecamp Basics’ (to learners who complete three modules within 12 months of starting).
  • Basecamp Certificate’ (to learners who complete parts 1 and 2, ie the full core programme of six modules, within 24 months of starting)

Neither of these certificates is formally accredited, but they do represent recognition of the study completed. Award of certificates depends on completion of each module (which is tracked online), timely submission of written assignments, and achieving a pass grade for assignments. (Please note that one re-submission will be allowed for any failed assignment, and one grade-level will be deducted on the grade for any assignment submitted late.)

Do I have to start in September?

No, we have three Basecamp intakes:

  • January
  • Easter
  • September

Does it matter where I live?

No. We have students enrolled on our Basecamp course from all around the UK and beyond. It is designed to be taken in-context, with tutorials happening online. If you can’t attend a tutorial because of your time zone, they are recorded for your convenience.
